Although the South Wold Hunt Group were based in Lincolnshire and held races for a prolonged period in the 19th and early 20th century, Sothwold in Suffolk also held its own race meeting. The Sporting Magazine of 1831 reported that a meeting, organised by the Southwold Steeplechase committee, was held on Wednesday 21st September 1831 when the 2 mile Sweepstakes was run over 3 heats. At the outset Lord Stradbroke’s Galopade was made 4/5 favourite, and after winning the first heat was reduced to 1/3. However, once Colonel Wilson’s Whiskey captured the second heat he was made the new favourite at the prohibitive odds of 1/10 and prevailed. A further meeting was reported in the same publication on Wednesday 11th September 1833 when the Hunter’s Stakes was won by Mr Smith’s Ploughboy, beating Young Tristram and Atlas. However, the highlight of the meeting was the Southwold Town Plate, twice round the course, which was won by Mr Munro’s Lady Charlotte. There are no records of further meetings held in this seaside resort.
